Ready to Make a Change This Stoptober?

October is a great opportunity to make a positive change for your health. Stoptober 2026 encourages smokers across England to make a quit attempt and access the support available to help them become smoke-free.

This year’s campaign carries the message “Let’s Quit Smoking Together”, reminding people that stopping smoking does not have to be something they tackle alone.

At Neera Medical Centre, we want to encourage our patients who smoke to consider making Stoptober the beginning of their journey towards a healthier, smoke-free future.

What Happens When You Stop Smoking?

Your body starts to benefit from stopping smoking sooner than you might expect.

Once you stop, your body begins clearing harmful substances and starting the recovery process. Over the following days and weeks, you may notice improvements in your sense of taste and smell, easier breathing and increased energy. Over time, circulation and lung function can also improve.

Importantly, the NHS emphasises that it is never too late to stop smoking. Quitting can improve your health regardless of your age or how long you have smoked.

Smoking, Stress and Mental Wellbeing

Some people smoke because they feel cigarettes help them cope with stress. However, nicotine can create a cycle in which withdrawal causes feelings such as irritability and anxiety, followed by temporary relief when another cigarette is smoked.

Research highlighted by the NHS indicates that stopping smoking can improve mental wellbeing, lift mood and reduce anxiety. The NHS also says that people can begin experiencing mental-health benefits from quitting in as little as six weeks.

Taking care of your mental wellbeing can therefore be another important reason to make a quit attempt this Stoptober.

Every Quit Attempt Counts

Have you tried to stop smoking before and started again? Don’t let a previous attempt prevent you from trying again.

Many smokers make several attempts before successfully stopping for good. A setback can also help you understand your triggers and identify what additional support you might need next time. NHS guidance encourages people who relapse to set another quit date and try again.

The important thing is to keep moving towards becoming smoke-free.

Think About What You Could Save

There can be a significant financial benefit to quitting too.

According to current NHS Better Health guidance, the average smoker can save around £49 per week by quitting – more than £2,500 over a year.

Imagine what you could do with that money instead. Keeping track of the money you save can also provide extra motivation as the smoke-free days begin to add up.

Quitting Helps Protect the People Around You

Stopping smoking isn’t only beneficial for your own health.

Becoming smoke-free helps protect family members and other people around you from second-hand smoke. This is particularly important for children, who are especially vulnerable to its harmful effects.

Being smoke-free can also provide a positive example for younger family members. The NHS reports that teenagers whose parents or caregivers smoke are four times as likely to take up smoking themselves.

Give Yourself the Best Chance of Success

Quitting can be difficult, particularly when relying on willpower alone. Planning ahead and finding the right support can make a real difference.

NHS stop-smoking support can include nicotine replacement therapies (NRT), stop-smoking medicines, support from local Stop Smoking Services, digital tools and the NHS Quit Smoking app. Your GP or stop-smoking adviser can help you understand which options may be suitable for you.

The NHS states that people who receive professional or expert support are three times more likely to quit for good than those without that support.
